We start at the beginning, 23 Meteor street, in actuality 23 Carleton Road, Tufnell park, was scouted by Sarah Lee, the location manager for Season one of Spaced and later on, Shaun of the Dead.
Picked by the trio for the unusual and slightly spooky look, this became home for the pretend couple of Tim and Daisy. Looking at the property it’s not hard to see why, with the unusual stepped gable design along the roof, it has a unique silhouette, which is as iconic now as it was in 1999
Although the flat was rented out to the faux couple for £90 a week, things have certainly taken a turn in the 21 years since, the house famously went on the market back in 2018, with an asking price of £4 million, one upside of these listings was a fresh glimpse of the interiors, however the original decor has long since gone, it does look pretty swish though. The exterior on the other hand, is a very different story. Looking like no time has passed at all, right down to the red, barred front door. The only noticeable difference is the wrought iron front gate, replacing the wooden one seen in the show. This was actually accidently ripped out of the stone by Nick Frost during the filming of Series 2, and can be seen in the outtakes, with the crew rushing to his aid.
The whole street is remarkably unchanged in fact, you can recreate any scenes set out on the road, be careful not to annoy the neighbours though!
The house was likely built in the 1860’s by the London born architect George Truefitt as a part of his development of the Tufnell park area, directly opposite is Tufnell Park primary school, a stark contrast to No, 23, this was built in 1954 and has a far more modern aesthetic, this was due to severe bombing the area faced during WW2, which the house was lucky enough to survive unscathed.
I’m happy to report that the building is grade 2 listed, which will hopefully ensure that this fantastic example of 19th Century architecture, and TV history, remains intact for many years to come.
Love this. The missus and I popped down to this spot last year to see it in person. Very cool that you're documenting all the locations. I've always wanted to know where the comic shop Tim worked at actually is. I've never been able to find any info on it.
